History of Jersey City Alumni

On February 6th 2009, in the home of charter member Alex David, the charter for Jersey City Alumni was conferred by the 25th Northeastern Province Polemarch, Paul Huggins. 21 brothers comprised the chartering group were present that evening along with other brothers in attendance.

Jersey City Alumni was the culmination of years of interest in establishing Kappa in Jersey City. The concept was actually hatched by brothers Eric Coit, who would eventually serve as the chapter’s first polemarch, Collin Caesar who would serve as the chapter’s sixth polemarch, and L-Mani S. Viney who would be instrumental in establishing Jersey City Alumni’s Guide Right program. In time, the Jersey City residents would be joined by other brothers living in Jersey City and the surrounding communities looking for a new fraternal home. Initially operating under the moniker, Jersey City Nupes, the chapter would find an ally in the Queens Alumni Chapter who would provide the template for the chapter’s by-laws and thus would draw in brothers such as Daniel Brown, Steve Chatman and Omar Morris who were dual members.

The new chapter, established on service and fellowship, would find recognition early by garnering National and Northeastern Province awards for Reclamation in 2009. In 2010, Jersey City Alumni would return to the podium by picking up Northeastern Province honors with Website, Reclamation, Chapter of the Year, and Guide Right. The Jersey City Nupes would win Reclamation Chapter of the Year again in 2011 and 2019 and Chapter of the Year in 2014.
